OF PHONOGRAPHY. 47 SIXTH PRINCIPLE OF ABBREVIATION.
This principle consists in abbre- viating words the first part of which are represented by prefixes. This is accomplished by writing the pre- fix and the succeeding phonograph in the word, instead of writing the whole of the word. When this is done, the prefix must be made close to the phonograph, but not so as to touch it, and which is always to be written about one -fourth of an inch above the line. As an example take the word pretend divide
...d thus pre- tend ; the illustration is s* \ Here we have written the four . First letters of the word, which are Miili- cient by the connection to suggest the meaning of the word. Often by writing the prefix alone in its pro- per place above the line, the word for which it stands may easily bo determined by the connection; the 48 A NEW SYSTEM principle, however, is that a suffi- cient number of the following con- sonants in a word succeeding the prefix should be written so that the word for which they stand may be readily understood.
