The Temporary Settlement.
The temporary settlement prevails in the rest of India. Here the demand is calculated at the end of certain periods. The usual term of a settlement is 30 years. A fairly long term is evidently necessary in order to enable profits of improvements made by settlement holders t...o be fully realised. In backward tracts where the agricultural con- ditions have not been thoroughly established shorter terms are allowed.
Re-Settlement.
At the end of the term of settlement the assessment is made over again. All the changes in the agricultural conditions that have taken place in the interval are taken into consideration and a Re-settlement is made to last again for a term of years.

In consequence of the long term for which settlements are usually made new assess- ments when they involve an increase in the amount of revenue assessed are often a hardship.
