As prospects improved, Europeans became interested in the commerce, and a large part of its bulk became diverted from the old sailing vessels to steamers. The exports which consist of tin, pepper, rice, live stock, and a little copra, were valued in 1907 at about £1,000,0(K), of which sum tin alone accounted for £600,000. Ten years ago it con- sisted of nothing but a little pepper, betel-nut, copi-a and dried fish, small quantities of which were carried to Singapore in two or three ancient and dilapidated steamers owned by Chinese, and in a number of small sailing vessels, and there exchanged for cotton goods and sundries. In 1898, the government, then beginning to administer the coast districts, found it necessary to secure communications with the capital and to that end subsidised a suitable steamer to run regularly from Bangkok to Singapore calling at the principal settle- COMMERCE AND TRADE 397 ments on the coast.
