Lanier's own handwriting within six weeks, at Rockingham Springs; but it was shaped from the material of the course of lectures delivered to Johns Hopkins students during the winter of 1878-79, and I believe it was largely the same. Mr. Lanier carried the heavy MS. by hand, in valise, to Balti- more. I remonstr...ated; but he solemnly de- clared that if anything should happen to that MS. it would kill him: that he could never replace it: meaning, that there was no reserve of life left from the task.
I find my memories of that summer very imperfect; it was a lull between storms.
