At times he stood gazing down over the parapet into the river, where the raging waters rushed past the side of the house. At times he walked aimlessly up and down the verandah, his hands in his pockets, his head sunk deep on his breast, unheeding the incessant gleam of the lightning in which the white polished walls of the house shone as though it were bright day.
