In a book that was supposed to be a fair and impartial review of the musical progress of the nation during one of its most eventful centuries, and to which, unfortunately, reference may be made in the future — for the British Museum re- ceives good and bad alike — ^the name of Sullivan is chiefly associated with his comic-opera music, and but passing mention is made of his orchestral work, or of that masterpiece of choral composi- tion, " The Golden Legend."
