We were awaked by the hurricane and the pelting of the rain upon our tents, which unhappily were not waterproof. Our attendants found it necessary at once to secure the pegs, which were the only support of our unsubstantial dwellings. A travelling com- panion told me that he could find no refuge but the somewhat ignominious one of hiding beneath the bed- clothes.
