PAYCOCKE'S is, like Nethergate House, a notable example of the richly treated timber houses which mark the prosperity of the media;^'al cloth- workers of East Angiia. A few years ago it was acquired by Mr. Noel E. Buxton, M.P., who thus brought back into Buxton ownership a house which had belonged to his famil...y for about two centuries before 1751. The first knowledge of Paycocke's comes from the \\-ill of John of that name, who in 1505 de^'ised to his son Thomas my house Ij^ing and bielded in the West Street of Coggeshall afore the \'icarage there." On the exquisitely car^•ed oak rafters of the hall ceiline- are the initials " T. P." and "M.P.," accompanied by a merchant's mark which was used by succeed- ing Paycockes. The initials " T. P." and the same mark are also to be found on the car\'ed oak frieze which along 43- -S'lKHHT 1K(JXT FROM XOKTH-WEST, runs and they attributed Paycocke, the John died in 1505.
