Unconsciously the advocates of newer ideals have allowed their opponents to define the nature of the test of so- cial efficiency which is to justify the existence of any movement. It has for centuries been assumed that the highest efficiency will be at- tained by the use of the doctrines which have been ecclesiastically approved. As has been shown, assurance has traditionally rested on the content of doctrine rather than on the method of deriving conclusions. Thus the natural chal- lenge of tra...ditional faith to newer thought is whether the outcome of criticism serves to con- firm certain predetermined conclusions. For example, a theologian is allowed to use the doc- trine of evolution, provided he can show that the evolutionary hypothesis is in accord with the teachings of the first chapter of Genesis.
