Gunning draws a striking picture of the Seniority of the college in the closing years of the eighteenth century. By its stat- utes Trinity was practically governed by the Master and the ten Senior Fejlows, the latter men who had lived for years in the college without generally doing any work, being content with holding their fellowship and living in celibate idleness.
