It attains this end by shortening the extent of the labourer's life, as a greedy farmer snatches increased produce from the soil by robbing it of its fertility." * (2) When Law interposes and shortens the hours of labour, the capitalist still attains his end hj '* squeezing out of the work- man more labour in a given time by increasing the speed of the machinery, and by giving the workman more machinery to tend." He substitutes intensified labour for labour of more extensive duration, and so exploits the labourer as successfully as before.
