But as regards that 21 part of life which bears a diredl relation to poli- tics, local or national, there are broadly these three principles. First, that principle well put in words which I quote from the last number of the "Independent Labour Party News, " that Socialists should confine themselves to the work of preaching the pure gospel and to hold- ing up the ideal steadily, uninfluenced by any compromise or alliance.
