The doctor diagnoses each case as carefully as he can, in view of his crowded waiting- ^ room; and then prescribes for each, in advance, the exact period of time he is to remain in the hospital. To this man, sick with the measles, he allots three weeks; this one, with small-pox, three months; this one, with a case of the grippe, two weeks; this one, with tuberculosis, — well, a man with a severe case the doctor considers too much of a bother, so he kills the tubercular patient and gets him off his mind and out of the way.
