The perpetrators of this crime were not arrested, and as must always be the case in so unregenerate a country as China, one result of thus offering the other cheek to the smiter was to encourage the spirit which gave rise to the fierce anti-foreign outbreak at Tientsin a few months later. For some time disquieting rumours had been in circulation foreshadowing an attack upon foreigners. The usual reports of children having been kidnapped were passing from mouth to mouth, and placards were posted... on the walls denouncing the mission- aries and all their ways. At last, on the 21st of June, the storm burst, and the mob marched to their work of destruction. The mission estab- lishments in the city were the first objects of attack. There ten sisters of mercy were murdered with every circumstance of revolting brutality.
