I will now venture to give some details respecting the prisons at Madrid, Cordova, Seville, Cadiz, and Lisbon. MADRID. The great prison at Madrid is called ha Carcel de la Carte. It was originally built by Philip IV. in 1636; but the greater part of the edifice, which was employed as a prison, was destroyed . by fire in 1791, and rebuilt in 1792, when the Salvador Convent was added to it.
