It was so evident that the mother had instructed them not to touch the dish, owing to the limited number of spears which their garden had been able to supply, that a smile went round the table at the confusion of the little child; the bitterness of thoughtless disobedience, the mortification caused by the looks and 92 Digitized by Google smiles of her sisters, coloured her sweet little face crimson.
