Filled with the portending good spirits of Christmas, he had slipped her a ten-dollar bill instead of the customary five and had winked at her. She took the bill in to the main bar—the “mixed bar,” she thought contemptuously—to be changed, and on a sudden impulse asked for a drink.
The harassed pro, a wiry, little Red-Irishman, who had all the money-making concessions for the clubhouse as well as running the pro shop, was helping his equally harassed bartender behind the overcrowded bar.
