The following are the sub-sections : 30 THE SCOTTISH SYSTEM 31 COMPULSORY ATTENDANCE ACT. (1) Without prejudice to any other power of a school board to provide in- struction in continuation classes, it shall be the duty of a school board to make suitable provision of continuation classes for the further instruction of young per- sons above the age of fourteen years with reference to the crafts and industries practiced in the district (including agriculture if so practiced and the domestic arts)..., or to such other crafts and industries as the school board, with the consent of the Department, may select, and also for their instruction in the English lan- guage and literature, and in Gaelic-speaking districts, if the school board so resolve, in the Gaelic language and literature. It shall also be their duty to make provision for their instruction in the laws of health and to afford opportunity for suitable physical training. (2) If it shall be represented to the Department on the petition of not less than ten ratepayers of the district that a school board are persistently failing in their duty under the foregoing subsection, the Department shall cause inquiry to be made and call upon the board to institute such continuation classes as appear to the Department to be expedient, and, failing compliance, may withhold or reduce any of the grants in use to be made to the board.
