To begin at the beginning, what is a Preparatory School ? To many of us the question seems super- fluous, and yet it has frequently been put to me ; and in any case it is clear that if we are to have just ideas as to what can be done and what cannot be done in the way of reorganizing our " Secondary " education, it is important that we should start with accurate information as to what is being done by existing institutions.
The Preparatory School is a comparatively ...modern invention ; fifty years ago there were not many of them, and at a slightly earlier period there were none. Alike in the day schools and in the boarding schools, it was the habit to herd boys of all ages to- gether. In the early days of such modern public schools as Marlborough and Rossall, boys of nine or no The Preparatory School ten still slept in the same dormitories with much older boys. In the private proprietary schools the same system, or want of system, was followed. As long as the proprietor filled his school, he did not trouble himself as to the ages of the boys whom he taught ; and the parents did not object — they do not even yet seem to object universally.
