The manuscript was written on the back of telegraph forms which Gordon had with him. It was most touching to look at the pages penned by him during those three awful months of heroic defence. He was cheery and hopeful in his style to the very end, and the diary was illustrated with some delightful little pen-and-ink sketches. One of Lord Granville, standing with his back to the fire in his room at Walmer Castle, and talking to some of his Cabinet friends as to the trouble which Gordon was givin...g them, was very clever, full of humour, and yet of infinite pathos. To think of the comfort and ease of that imaginary group and the trials and solitude of the hero in Khartoum !
