There were, however, no estates to which this procedure had been applied prior to the middle of the seven- teenth century. In the eighteenth century they were more numerous than at any other time, but at the end of the colonial period there were only eighteen important estates with reference to which this practice obtained. There were others subject to certain restrictions as to trans- mission, although they were not properly under the law of primogeniture.
