... In 1942, Pappy introduced the thing in the Senate, where it received one vote. In 1944, 254 SOUTHERN EXPOSURE Florida and Arkansas adopted the so-called "Right-to- Work" amendment, with the CAs spending an admitted $67, 873. 49 in the latter state. That same year California voters rejected the amendment, perhaps because the GAs were not called in. There the Mer- chants and Manufacturers Association carried the ball, but chambers of commerce, the Democratic party, church groups, city and cou...nty commissions, union groups, newspapers, Ameri- can Legion posts, and the Veterans of Foreign Wars all got together to nail it. Said the VFW: "The proposed 'Right of Employment' initiative will not create one additional job. . . . It will, however, if adopted, create a condition under which reactionary employers can ruthlessly exploit working men and women. . . . This amendment proposes to restrict the very liberty and freedom our brothers and sons are fighting for overseas. " When the amendment was brought before the Texas house in 1945, it voted in to 14 to investigate the "Christian Ameri- can's" lobbying activities.
