The family Estrildidae, containing the waxbills and their allies, was the most important family in each of the 5 years, and contributed more than half (55%) of all imported birds. In 1972, 7 species in this family were among the 8 most frequently imported species (the canary, in the family Fringillidae, was the other); those same 7 species were among the 10 most commonly imported forms in 1968-72, each with more than 139,000 individuals brought to this country (Table 4). Of the 25 species leadi...ng the list of importations in the period, 14 are in the family Estrildidae. The family Fringillidae, which includes a wide variety of finches, was the second most important imported group and contributed nearly 19% of the birds entered in the 5-year period. The domestic canary alone is responsible for 70%i of the fringillids, but, even if the canary were omitted from considera- tion, this family would rank third in the number of individuals imported. Many species of finches are imported, but only 1 in addition to the canary is included in the top 25 for 1968-72 (Table 4).
