But, Sir, as an independent man, giving an inde- pendent opinion to the best of my humble judgment, I am bound to say, that I consider his ignorance of the languages, manners, and habits of the people with whom he had to deal, his want of experience in native character and political life in India, and above all, his total want of sympathy with the un- fortunate Ameers, were the main cause of the fatal result of these negotiations.
