We have only said that we are entitled to a decision of the Supreme Court of the United States, and that we should be allowed to try the in- stitution of slavery, that thus it might be ascertained what the decree of Nature is. Both ...these have been denied to us. We have been denied by Congress an appeal to the Supreme Court; we have been debarred by Con- gressional agitation from obtaining the decree of Natm'e. We ask that both shjiH be permitted to us ; granted not as a boon, but secured to us as a right — an equal right of the sovereign States of the South. More than this we have not claimed — more than this we do not desire. Instead of insisting upon the expression of any opinion of Congress in accordance with our own, we ask that the expression called for by the Senator from Kentucky shall be suspended.
