The stream winds in a tortuous course over a rocky bed, and, as the water is low at this time of year, poling the canoes was laborious work and hard on the men.
To lighten the load of my canoe I suggested— and 196 SPORT INDEED it was so arranged — that I should get out and walk through the woods, meeting them further up and at a point where the road and stream met again, some two miles away.
