By the end of the seventeenth century Burslem, " the mother of the Potteries, " was celebrated for its Delft ware (an imitation of the ware made at Delft, in Holland, and soon to supersede it), Crouch and mottled pottery, and the misnamed " Elizabethan " ware.
The beautiful pottery of Josiah Wedgwood made Etruria famous. " Wedgwood " ware is produced at the same works, together with "Majolica, " "Queen's" and " Rockingham " ware, and Parian statuary. A special maroon variety of Wedgwood or jasp...er ware, with white figures on a dark red ground, was manufactured at one time solely for America, but at a time of trade depression the demand ceased, and the ware is made no longer.
During the nineteenth century the growth of the industry has been rapid. At the present time many thousands of persons of both sexes are employed in the manufacture of all kinds of pottery, from the most l/i > G o 0, u X.
