Since the stars are of every degree of brightness, the gradations are expressed upon a numerical scale, with fractions of a magnitude expressed decimally. Thus, 61 Cygni, which is near the dividing line between a star of the fifth and one of the sixth magnitude, is now given as of the 5.6 magnitude.
