Requiring little nourishment, it thrives anywhere, and thus well merits its name. Another species is * The sea-lavender, which lacks perfume ' (Statice binervosa) ; a sort of everlasting, with pretty lilac-blue blossoms, and bluish-green leaves. The large-flowered hemp-nettle (Galeopsis versicolor) is common in the Highlands of Scotland, though somewhat rare in England. It is a tall, hand...some plant, with bright yellow blossoms, having a purple spot on the lower lip. The common hemp-nettle (Galeopsis tetrahit} has much smaller flowers, a delicate purplish-yellow or white, growing in whorls around the stem, which is much swollen beneath its couplet leaves. The red hemp-nettle (Galeopsis ladanum} is a smaller plant, less common. Its flowers are a mottled mixture of purple and crimson, SEPTEMBER. 201 growing in clusters of two or three. Its leaves are small and notched. On this waste bank we may gather a few sprays of the fool's parsley (CEttmsa cynapittm}, a poisonous weed, often mistaken for the true parsley.
