He told me how in old days he used to pace up and down the Embankment with his dear friend Canon Liddon every Monday afternoon, when the latter was in residence, and how they threshed out "every- thing in the universe ! " Often, when Parliament was sitting, he would turn into the House of Commons in passing, to hear the result of some di...vision, or debate, I awaiting him among the statues in the vestibule, as befitted a mere woman ! I remember, much later, during the coal strike in March 1912, going to the House with him, and certain militant ladies having been much in evidence about that time, the constable on duty at the great stone steps insisted on inspecting the contents of my small handbag, to Mr. Stead's great amusement. When he rejoined me, some minutes afterwards, he remarked : 11 1 have just been talking to the greatest optimist and the greatest pessimist in the House.
