I shall never forget those walks with him, along the Em- bankment, amidst the " lights o' London/' nor our talks of a hundred things, past, present and future. When he rejoined me, some minutes afterwards, he remarked : 11 1 have just been talking to the greatest optimist and the greatest pessimist in the House.
