In 1900, shortly before Illinois Steel Company was acquired in the formation of U. S. Steel Corporation, the trade name was changed to "Universal Portland Cement. " In the following years up to 1906, when a new U. S. Steel subsidiary, Universal Portland Cement Company, was formed, two plants were built at Buffington, near Gary, Indi- ana. Subsequently, the company established its third plant at Buffington, also one near Pittsburgh at Uni- versal, Pennsylvania, and another at Duluth, Min- nesota..., all of which continue to make portland ce- ment from granulated blast-furnace slag and lime- stone. In 1930, the Atlas Portland Cement Company, which had also been an important pioneering cement manufacturer, was joined to the Universal Portland Cement Company and the two names were combined to form the Universal Atlas Cement Company. This subsidiary has acquired and maintained a position of leadership in the cement industry by reason of its many innovations in the development, manufacture and use of the product, some of which are cited in this section.
