What reading level is Stratford-On-Avon book?
To quickly assess the difficulty of the text, read a short excerpt:
The building of the Elizabethan house at Charlecote was begun in 1558 — the year of Elizabeths accession — and was probably finished in 1559. Its owner was Thomas Lucy. For more than five centuries his ancestors had owned the Charlecote Manor, which had figured in Domesday Book under the name of Ceorlecote. At first the lords of the manor took their surname from the place, but early in the thirteenth century William de Charlecote, who had fought with the Barons Charlecote House 2 1 3 against Ki...ng John, assumed, for reasons which antiquaries have not determined, the name of Lucy. A manor-house, with a chapel attached, was in existence at Charlecote throughout the Middle Ages, and its owners' prosperity grew, chiefly through intermarriages, with every generation. One Fulk de Lucy, who died in 1303, was '*a special lover of good horses," and paid forty marks (i.e. ;^26 113:4) for a black horse at a time when an ox cost sixteen shillings. Many of his descendants sat in Parliament as knights of the shire of Warwick, and nearly all of them, for military services rendered to the Crown at home or abroad, received the honour of knighthood.
