In the case of steel, the temperature necessary varies with the percentage of carbon present in the metal. When the proportion of carbon is above i per cent. , welding is diffi- cult, if not impossible. Welded joints made by the aid of a steam hammer are found to be about 5 per cent, stronger for wrought iron and 10 per cent, stronger for mild steel than similar joints made by hand. The strength of a weld depends very much upon the suitability of the metal, upcn the form of joint, upon the care... taken to bring the surfaces joined into close contact, and upon their freedom from oxide, cinder, &c. The welding together of steel and cast iron is not difficult if the steel be of suitable quality; but such a practice is not adopted for the connexion of structural iron and steel. (a) Electrical Welding. Some tests by Professor Unwin of electrically welded steel bars of small dimensions yielded the following results: 7O STRUCTURAL IRON AND STEEL. Table XXVL Strength of Electrical Welded Steel (Unwin).
