To quickly assess the difficulty of the text, read a short excerpt:
Tundra of Eurasia and North America The frost-soil forms of the tundra have a very special significance for European Pleistocene geology, because recent microforms of tundra soil which may be readily interpreted climatically are recognized in the Pleistocene deposits of central Europe and can be considered as indicators of the Pleistocene periglacial climate. For the border between the tundra and the high-polar Arctic, I follow K.Wigge (The tundra as a landscape form — Dissertation, Cologne, 19...27), who considered as tundra the regions north of the arctic forest border up to the northern edge of the Eurasian and North American continents, including several islands close to the continents. It is distinguished from the Arctic primarily by the relatively continuous cover of vegetation and the extensive occurrence of peat. The climatic border is complex. Like the Arctic and like the most continental portions of the coniferous forest belt, the tundra is characterized by permafrost. But all types of tundra do not have vegetation cover.
