Brutus allows Antony to speak the funeral oration and even exhorts the i^eople to hear Antony and to show respect to the dead 224 ANTONY'S'" ORATION 225 Ceesar. The following is Shakespeare's idea of what Antony must have said under the circum- stances. The oration is one of the most remark- able discourses of the kind that has ever been written, changing as it does the attitude of the hostile populace and moving them to believe and act in behalf of the murdered Csesar.
