Both were shrewd men of business. Shakespeare, as is notorious, made a larger fortune out of the stage than any of his con- temporaries except Alleyn ; that Sophocles had as keen an eye for the main chance, and was similarly successful, is placed beyond doubt by what Aristophanes tells us.^ In youth and middle age both were voluptuaries ; tradition on this point is so persistent and unanimous that it cannot be put aside, and by no poets in the worid has the terrible and degrading tyranny of mer...e passion been so intimately and appallingly described.* In both the same easy temper, geniality, good-nature, modesty and pleasant wit not only disarmed the envy and ill-feeling which their parts and prosperity might other- wise have excited, but made them universally beloved. The delightful glimpse which we get of Sophocles at Chios cited by Athenaeus from Ion ; ' the picture which Aristophanes gives of him in the Frogs ; the testimony of the Anony- mous Biographer, that he was '* loved in every * Paoit 66&-609, Ariatophaiies, it may be added, may cer- tamly be trosted, for he had no prejudice against Sophocles.
