The proof that the family of Phut were black is rather inferen- tial than positive ; but can the mind fail to determine that it is certain ? But again. Phut, as an appellative, signifies scattered. Thus Num. X. 30. "Let thine... enemies be scattered, " (Ti*5 phutsu. ) In Genesis x. 18, it is used with the same Heemanti, and with the same effect, which we have noticed in the word Naamah, thus : " And afterwards were the families of the Canaanites spread abroad, '' ViiD. 3 naphotsu. The idea is, by the influence of the circumstances attending them, they were scattered. The condition is involuntary, the action implied is reflective. A similar use of the word occurs o in 2 Samuel xviii. 8 : "The battle was scattered, " mV*^'^ napliot- setk ; that is, it was scattered only as it was forced to be by the circumstances attending it.
