In spite of Mr. Arnold's " fine head," it is palpable that there was no slow and gradual growth of a legendary story, but that the story was from the beginning unequivocal, well-defined, in all essential features precisely what the New Testament records present to us.
One thing is certain. The supernatural is so inwrought into the very substance of the New Testament, that unbelieving critics can eliminate it only by the most arbitrary and uncriti- cal process, and con never come to any agreement among them- selves as to what is to be accepted and what rejected in the evangelical portraiture of Jesus Christ and his work.
