To quickly assess the difficulty of the text, read a short excerpt:
Conditions described as acute, and as intermittent ranula are also recognized, though very rare. In the acute cases a swelling suddenly appears beneath the tongue, the mucous mem- brane lining the floor of the mouth is raised above the dental border, salivation is profuse, speech, deglutition, and even respiration are interfered with, and suffocation may threaten. Astringent washes usually are sufficient to relieve the symp- toms, and the cystic swelling may disappear as rapidly as it came, as ...was the case in the only patient with this rare af- fection I have seen; but. some- times incision is required. In the chronic cases the cyst, though unilateral at first, may spread so as to involve the entire sublingual region; very seldom at the present day is it allowed to grow so large as to project in the submental region. The mucous membrane slides freely over it, and its surface often is covered with dilated and tortuous veins (Fig. 772) ; it is semi-trans- lucent, and the contents are a viscid, ropy fluid.
