If seen early and there is no acute pain or tenderness, fixation by a plaster bandage from the ankle to the perineum, with a high sole (three inches) on the sound foot, and a pair of crutches, meet the indications. If there is quite severe pain and some tenderness about the joint, a good-sized patch should be touched with the Paquelin cautery before the plaster... is applied. If the knee is very painful, tender, considerably swollen, and there is marked spasm of the mus- cles with flexion, nothing will relieve all the symptoms so prompltly as bed, and traction with weight and pulley. The traction should, of course, be made in the long axis of the leg, which will gradually approach the long axis of the thigh as improvement occurs. In the 258 SURGICAL DISEASES OF CHILDREN course of a few weeks this treatment will usually prepare the limb for some form of ambulant apparatus, such as the plaster bandage or the Thomas knee-splint.
