I lucked across this on Scribd. I enjoyed it, though admittedly not as much as the first. Some of the magic seemed to have gone. If the first book was about how Geralt's destiny became locked with Yennefer's, this one is most certainly about how his destiny is locked with Ciri's. I enjoyed learning more of the Witcher lore.
Again- this novel is told in series of short stories. I think it was much more disjointed then the first, but I also suspect some of it has to do with the translator. The
version I read of this was not translated by the same person as the version I read of The Last Wish.
There were times when it became confusing whether Geralt was having a flashback or possibly a hallucination, and then all at once you were back in the present. Additionally, I wish I had a timeline for this book in relation to the last book. Or just a timeline in general. There's a brief reference to The Little Mermaid in this story, but otherwise most of the classic fairy tale references had disappeared, and I sort of missed them. This was a book with purpose.
All the classic Witcher elements are there. The signs, potions, elixirs and general monster fighting. This was a journey of self discovery for Geralt, and it lagged at times. Mostly I had trouble putting it down though, and enjoyed it immensely. I'm looking forward to the next book (Blood of Elves I think?). I believe it is supposed to be a full length novel.
