Crouched in the hedges outside Duke Velius’s chambers, he stayed just beyond the square of lamplight cast from the open window. “Erik!” the duke yelled at the man. “Erik!”
There was no answer. More guards arrived at the bedchamber door.
“He’s exhausted,” said the duke. “See if you can rouse him enough to for a hot bath, and then get him into bed. Have food waiting when he wakes.”
There were grunting sounds as the guards complied with the order.
