The consequence of these light duties on tobacco and cigars is that the revenue received is almost equally divided, and the number of cigars and cheroots which paid the $3 rate was 4, 237, 755, 943, and of cigarettes at 50 cents 4, 042, 391, 640, the manufacture of which must have afforded employment to an enormous number of hands compared with the similar industry in Great Britain.
