"The Fifth Symphony" he wntes^JL'Jsihejweakest of all Tchaikovsky's symphonies ; nevertheless it is a striking work, and takes a prominent place not only among Tchaikovsky's compositions, but among Russian musical works in general. The symphony is divided into the usual four movements. The first — Andante, Allegro con anima — opens with an introduction in which we hear the exposition of the chief subject of the symphony. This subject runs like a dark thread through the whole tissue of the work.... The introduction is conceived in that mood of sadness so common to Tchaikovsky. The Allegro has two subjects : one melancholy in character, the other full of brightness and vitality. Both are developed with much brilliance and animation.
Then, suddenly, the chief subject reappears and the music grows sombre once more. As this theme dies away on the bassoons, the movement comes to an end. The second movement — Andante cantahile con alcuna licenza — takes the form of a romance.
His Life and Works 99 The subject given out by a solo horn passes over to the violoncello, and is afterwards assigned to the strings.
