To quickly assess the difficulty of the text, read a short excerpt:
The cracks along the panel edges were generally as pronounced as those around the capitals. Fig. 10 shows the location of the more important cracks on the lower side of the slab in panels A and C, the panels in which the principal tension gage lines on the lower side of the floor were placed. In panels B and D, in addition to those noted in the figure, there were cracks over the panels in positions similar to those noted in panels A TEST OF THE WESTERN NEWSPAPER UNION BUILDING 21 and C. In pane...l D the cracks were not so wide nor so numerous as in the other panels, even at the maximum load. Panel B had larger and more numerous cracks than the other panels. Most of the cracks on the lower side of the slab were found in bands extending in rec- tangular directions. In a small area at the panel centers cracks ex- tended in diagonal directions. No cracks or checks had been noted on the lower side of the slab before loading was begun. The first hair cracks here were observed at a load of 234 Ib.
