Should corn prove insufficient for fatten- ing steers ,then kafir, milo and feterita are relied upon. They are almost as good as Page Twenty-Four TEXAS FARM OPPORtUNltlES corn, according to the experiences of practical feeders and of the various Texas experi- ment stations, which have established standards of relative feeding values. The feeding of hogs is an important industry. In Texas it is not wholly based upon corn, as is the case in corn States. On the contrary, hogs may be grown to a sto...cker weight of 80 to 125 pounds on rape, alfalfa, Sudan grass, peanuts and such winter pasture as wheat, barley, rye and oats. This combination of feed will insure quick growth. Later the hogs can either be shipped to other territory for finishing on cheap concentrates or be finished on home-grown kafir, milo, feterita, corn or barley. Barley as a hog feed in North Texas is receiving the attention of practical feeders more and more every year. The barley will yieM from 35 to 50 bushels an acre, and is out of the field by June.
