The fort was abandoned in 1826 through the instrumentality of Col. Snelling, who disliked Prairie du Chien for differences he had had with some of its prin- cipal inhabitants, and the troops were removed to Fort Snelling. The following year, on account of fresh Indian troubles, two companies were returned. Having exchanged boats, & obtained one of about 12 Tons, with 6 oarsmen, left Prairie Du Chien at 9 A. M. , with a fresh & fair breeze Passed the Ouisconsin river on the East. This river is about 600 yards wide at its mouth, & con- nected with the Fox river, (between which, there is but one mile portage) forms the communication from the Upper Lakes to the Mississippi.
