To quickly assess the difficulty of the text, read a short excerpt:
When the church had an eastern, but no western transept, the one groiq> might considt simply of a pair of toweis, the othw, of a central tower with its subordinate turrets. The cathedral of limburg on the Lahn (a little later in date and style than the buildings I have just named, but whidi may fairly be classed with them as to eharacter) has an outline to which this a r r a n ge ment gives great beauty and variety, and which harmonizes well with its picturesque site, on the summit of a steop r...ock, at the foot of which runs the river. l%ie western front has two fine towers; the intersection, an octagon; and at the end of the nwth transept is a pair of lofty square tur- rets; a similar finish being evidently intended on the 90uth side. A sin^ western tower and two lateral towers or tur- rets near the east ^id also forms a composition of which examples are to be found. In Lombardy the cmtral octagon is common, and in- stead of the two chancel turrets we c^n see only one large and lofty tower, used as a belfiry, standing on the side of the chanceL In England the western transept is ix)t a common feature; neverthdess there are instances — ^Lincoln, as wdl as Peterborough, has a short western transept; but instfiftd of a sin^ tower at its intersection with the nave, it has one at its intersection with eadi of the aisles^ In both citfes the transit is nmdi hidden and disguised by a later west front : but this adds to the variety of the group.
