Portions of the font formerly in the Norman chapel in the south transept are also here. Under the painted window is a piscina, more than half of which is modern work. There were, no doubt, two altars, i.e., one in each part of the chapel, but the dedication of the other part is not known.
At the intersections of the vaulting are some unusually interesting carved bosses. For the most part they have reference to the legend of St. Edmu\id, King and Martyr, viz ; — The head of the king bearing a cr...own. The king, bound to a tree, being shot at by Danes. A greyhound watching by the body of Lodbrog in the wood, murdered by the king's hunts- man. Christ with a halo of glory, triumphing over Sin personified as a monster. St. Michael destroying the dragon.
Otlier bosses are either floral or heraldic, the latter con- taining llie arms of the 1 )esi)ensers. The boss in the centre of the roof is unirjue, containing a lion being attacked by various other animals, ('..i,'., a horse, a ram, a monkey, wolve.s, etc.
