This generous act of self-devotion was not lost upon those who saw it ; many of the sailors groaned aloud as they beheld the noble sacrifice. Williams would have fol- lowed her, but they forcibly detained him ; the side of the vessel became crowded, and many more having jumped into the boat, they were obliged to push off immediately, to avoid being overloaded.
